When an open-air courtyard at Irondequoit High School was converted to a new, state-of-the-art library, more than 200 vintage windows were left homeless. Instead of heading to a landfill, they were reborn as The Windows Project, a public art project by the West Irondequoit Foundation in cooperation with the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester.

The Windows Project engaged 84 artists and 66 sponsors to create works of art from the discarded windows in a wide variety of media. “Cosmic Windows,” the largest single installation, comprises 11 large, six-pane windows containing 66 translucent cosmic images, many of which were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Created by artists Richard and Barbra Devine, “Cosmic Windows” introduces you to new worlds through old windows.
